Description
The scene above was captured in late July around 9:00 AM near the back of Wolf Creek Cove on Pomona Lake. The small family unit waded across almost 200 yards of lake. They were in no apparent hurry, no threat or danger appeared to be pushing them across. I can only assume it was a convenient short cut from point A to point B.
It is hard to deceive the senses of a deer. Even though I was in a camouflaged Poke Boat wearing camouflaged clothing with face and hands covered in camouflage they were aware of my presence. I stayed quiet and kept my movements to a minimum. If you must move, move slowly and round your corners. Nothing quick, just slow and smooth. In this situation I wasn't perceived as a threat. The distance I maintained and the fact I was on the water seemed to help.
Whitetail does travel in family groups and don't tolerate unrelated does in their midst. Pregnant does will drive off their offspring from the previous year but once they have delivered and the fawn is able to travel they allow their older offspring to rejoin the family group.
